The story behind Mobile Observatory
Creator of Mobile Observatory
The developer of Mobile Observatory, Wolfgang Zima, spent years as a professional astronomer before transitioning to software development. After completing his PhD in Astronomy at the University of Vienna, he moved to Belgium to work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Astronomy at KU Leuven for five years. There, he discovered his passion for scientific software development, creating tools for analyzing spectra of pulsating stars and building a CCD image simulator for a space mission searching for exoplanets.
The story of Mobile Observatory began unexpectedly: after his Nokia phone broke during a mountain biking trip in late 2010, Wolfgang bought his first Android phone and was surprised to find no quality astronomy apps available. He decided to build one himself. Mobile Observatory was first released in January 2011 and has since grown into one of the most comprehensive astronomy apps for Android — with over 1 million downloads of the free version and 250,000+ downloads of the Pro version — continuously improved over more than a decade.
Since 2012, Wolfgang has called Freiburg, Germany home. Today, he works as a Senior Mobile Developer at sevdesk while continuing to develop Mobile Observatory with the same passion as day one — now with the help of modern AI tools that allow him to bring new features to life faster than ever before.
